Increased Inflammation and lipid levels, including low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, have been associated with a diet high in saturated fatty acids. As a result, many health risks, such as heart disease and diabetes, have been associated with this. Therefore, the treatment focuses on optimizing postprandial (post-meal) lipid metabolism.
Sacha inchi is well-known for its high protein and healthy fat content, which is primarily made up of polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omegas 3, 6, and 9. These fats, unlike saturated fats, have been demonstrated to have positive impacts on human health, such as lowering cholesterol and reducing inflammation.
What was the study?
This randomized crossover clinical trial was conducted in Cartagena and Cali, Colombia, by three Colombian universities. The findings were published in the Journal of Food Biochemistry in 2018.
There were 20 metabolically healthy people and 22 metabolically unwell adults among the participants. After a two-week washout period, they were given a high-fat meal with or without 15 mL of sacha inchi oil. 100 g buttered toast and sweetened coffee were served for breakfast.
A blood test was used to measure various biomarkers before breakfast (fasting) and also 1 and 4 hours after the meal. Cholesterol levels and interleukin-6 levels were among the markers used, but they were not the limited ones (an inflammatory marker).

What Were The Results?
In the metabolically healthy group, sacha inchi oil was found to lower interleukin-6 levels while also reversing an increase in cholesterol levels.
In the metabolically unhealthy group, however, sacha inchi oil suppressed an increase in lipopolysaccharides (lipid-and-carbohydrate-containing molecules) and interleukin-6 expression.

What Does It Mean?
The findings suggest that sacha inchi oil can improve postprandial lipid metabolism and reduce inflammation after high-fat meals, however the magnitude of these effects varies depending on individual metabolic status. It may be possible to counteract the negative effects of increased fat consumption on health by doing so.
Further research on the appropriate usage of sacha inchi for decreasing cholesterol levels and inflammation is recommended by the researchers.
